I was impressed with the quality of the cast; however, I was disappointed when part of the armor on the Daemonic Steed around the neck snapped off under a slight bit of pressure. Other than that issue it was much easier to assemble than metal models and much easier to hold while painting. I'm entering this model into a Finecast painting competition at my local GW store (Westminster, MD). It's also the first step in a Warriors of Chaos army that I'm just beginning the assembly process on. On to the pictures...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5XX-WUhiRjAJE-8p1rqC9OkfnCh3EHDSf62Hp8TyloU1vrVQTMbb4TlF2kyMJkJSNqunaP4xUOUjA_YSg6rnR7vNWS2N7LkNnO765uUw5iDCuqhYlZny74auaFNm_qUQUYijtYP_AWVCE/s200/IMG_0687.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620046570130332802" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxmfAkf3PmBe_c1KPL_g8zG2bZiWjn3_MeurIqXXTbDY8g_ZIRPpgbuEdfO_F9xkrvrZ7vkoPFt5labLQT-TUIQz3y8U9HLgV8pTA00VkxjnEM7q93wzUVMA_aOCvYZXhRkIP6KkZQy3M6/s200/IMG_0686.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620046923819645410" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiii8IwSqMcW88nChmyWL9zkPuNNxGVzmCZvFGmNcdBGLpN7QGnN_CNBPHWcdLTHxbg7b_Df5XHWJgBKphZp29gHVytjqvb0b_o-oFIjh_kqC5pyhFKNSdv_KvNeqQtJ2FyHkYKwibkmiE8/s200/IMG_0685.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620047587242688914" />Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-70281103935074014382011-03-07T20:07:00.000-08:002011-03-07T20:15:54.769-08:00I'm the Juggernaught!Been working on one of the new plastic warjacks, this one's assembled as a Juggernaught. I had some issues during assembly so one of the arms looks pretty weird. I think I have a pretty solid recipe for the reds. All of these colors are Reaper. Basecoat of Bloodstain Red, then 1:1 mix of Bloodstain Red and Clotted Red, then Clotted Red, 1:1 of Clotted Red and Carnage Red, then a final highlight of Carnage Red. I wash some Devlan mud around the joints and in the shadows. On to some photos...

I'll keep trying to do little pieces like this as the mood strikes me. I really want to paint up something chaotic now...

Ishvaar was born into a small village in the Kislev border regions. As an infant he was cast out to die because he bore the mark of the dark gods upon him, twisted limbs and a crooked spine. His gods had other plans for Ishvaar; despite the harsh elements he managed to survive for 9 days in the snow, the sacred number of Tzeentch. On the ninth day he was discovered by barbarian horsemen who were devoted to the dark gods. They saw the mark of their gods upon the infant and took him back to their village.

As a child it was obvious that Ishvaar had the favor of the gods. He was quickly more advanced in the dark arts than the village shaman. By the time he was a young man he was ready to journey into the Chaos wastes on his own. Though the warriors of the tribe knew that Ishvaar was marked by the gods they did not believe he could survive a solo trek to the Eye of Chaos. After three years in the wastes Ishvaar returned to his village a changed man; to this day he still will not discuss the things he saw and experienced.

Upon his return Ishvaar spoke much less and became short-tempered and taciturn. He had a dark aura about him. His twisted limbs became even more twisted. His arms in particular seemed to be constantly shifting and changing shapes. Those who looked upon them too long soon lost their minds, it was said that to look upon the arms of Ishvaar the Twisted was to look into the insanity of Chaos itself.

Within days of returning to the tribe Ishvaar gathered up a band of warriors and horsemen and marched through the snow towards the Empire. The first village that the band came across was the very one from which Ishvaar had been cast out as an infant. His warriors roughly herded all of the inhabitants of the village into the town square and looked on as their dark master decided what to do with them. With a flick of his twisted arm Ishvaar immolated the townsfolk in a pyre that reached thousands of feet into the sky. This act cemented Ishvaar in the legend of the northmen and earned him an even larger band of followers.

So begins the tale of the horrors wrought by Ishvaar the Twisted...

Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-34077108504828558982011-01-24T08:57:00.001-08:002011-01-24T09:14:13.540-08:00Painting Progress, January 2011Here are some of the photos from the work I've been doing this month. The first few photos are the Butcher of Khardov from Warmachine.

I don't have the shields done yet but I will put up more pictures when the unit is done. The fur ended up with a bit of a red tint due to the undercoat I used. I kept a few of the wolves to paint up as display pieces when I need something different to paint as a change of pace.

I've been working bit by bit on some Khador widowmakers for Warmachine, I'm not really in a hurry to get them painted so it's been nice to work on my techniques. Right now I'm really working on blending highlights from dark to light on larger surfaces. When I have some time I'll try to get some pictures up. I also finished another Widowmaker as well as the Butcher of Khardov.

My main project right now is working on some Skaven. I have 20 clanrats with spears that are just about done (15 completed, 5 in progress). Once I have them done I have the Skaven from Island of Blood on the way, should keep me busy painting for a while to come. I'll get some pictures up of the completed Skaven when I have some extra time.
Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-78652893743289911782010-12-09T17:25:00.001-08:002010-12-09T17:27:31.223-08:00New Brushes! My amazing wife just gave me the thumbs up to order some Winsor Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable brushes! I can't wait! I've really been trying to push myself on each new model I paint so I really think these brushes will help a lot.

I've been seeing green a lot lately, with the new Orcs and Goblins announced for March I'm trying to paint up a bit of a Waagh! I'm also hoping to start working on Orks as well, would love to get my hands on some of those amazing Forgeworld Ork kits.
Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-1356318445776761692010-07-10T13:40:00.000-07:002010-07-10T13:47:22.343-07:00Completed Thunderers and Organ Gun WIPLast night I was able to finish out the unit of 10 Thunderers and then began work on the organ gun and crew as well as a movement tray for them. I did complete 5 thunderers out of 10 for the unit a few days ago. Other than that I have not been doing any painting at all.

Once the thunderers are completed all that's left will be a gyrocopter, a cannon, an organ gun, a stone thrower and then 14 longbeards, with the stone thrower and the longbeards still to purchase. I can see the finish line now, it's just a matter of keeping up the pace on painting.

After the dwarves are finished I've decided to start a Vampire Counts army. With this one I'm going to try to paint in 500 point segments so I don't get overwhelmed the way I did with my dwarves when I purchased them all in one go.Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-17309763768027868662010-07-01T08:08:00.000-07:002010-07-01T08:15:50.246-07:00King Orri Hornblower (photos)I wanted to dedicate a whole post to a couple of photos of the recently completed King Orri Hornblower on the shield borne by his twin bodyguards Hari and Gari.

June was a great month for me in the painting department! I completed 10 Longbeards, all 17 Hammerers, Orri on his shield, and movement trays for the lot of them! My goals for July are to rebase and paint 10 thunderers (in progress, expect photos soon) and base and paint the organ gun and its crew. It seems that when I set my goals lower in any given month I get more completed. I've been painting every day for at least an hour, closer to two really so I am really hoping to have the majority of the army painted by the time the new semester begins in the fall.

In other hobby news I am in the process of selling of 4 armies that I bought the beginnings of and never really got started in. All of this is going to allow me to begin a new fantasy army this fall. I have it narrowed down to Skaven, Ogres, and Tomb Kings. I was only able to briefly flip through the rulebook at my local store so I did not get to read too much about the new rules (not to mention the redshirt kept on pestering me with questions). I did however notice rules for a dwarf zeppelin that mounts 5 (!!!!!!) organ guns on board. I'm keeping my fingers crossed a model gets made by Forgeworld.

I put together a 2500 pt list (that seemed to be the number that the shop said would be most common). This list is more or less based on models that I currently have.
Lords
Dwarf Lord -> Goes with the Hammerers
Shieldbearers and Shield
Master Rune of Smiting
Rune of Fury
Rune of Cleaving
Rune of Stone
Heroes
Thane -> I'm thinking with the Ironbreakers, but maybe the Longbeards?
BSB
Great Weapon and Shield
Strollaz's Rune

Master Engineer -> will go with Grudge Thrower
Great Weapon
Brace of Pistols
Rune of Stone
Core
24 Warriors
Full Command
Shields and Great Weapons

24 Longbeards
Full Command
Shields and Great Weapons
Rune of Stoicism

10 Thunderers
Shields and Great Weapons
Special
19 Ironbreakers
Full Command
Rune of Battle

17 Hammerers
Shields
Full Command

Cannon
Rune of Reloading
Rune of Forging

Grudge Thrower
Rune of Accuracy
2x Rune of Penetration
Rare
Organ Gun
Gyrocopter (but I hate the model so much I'm even considering the Flame Cannon)

Any thoughts on the list? I'd like to hear how you would deploy the blocks. What units could do with more (or less) as far as models/upgrades go?

Thanks for reading and posting!Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-60141874389723823602010-06-19T11:06:00.000-07:002010-06-19T11:08:39.301-07:00The Bodyguard of the KingWhen not working this month I've done a TON of painting! With a couple of hours work tonight I will have the last of 17 Hammerers finished up. I'll try to get some pictures of the unit on my next day off work. Don't know what I'll be painting next but I'm thinking about either the Gyrocopter or the King and his shieldbearers to make the Hammerers look complete. I'd love to buy some more of the classic metal Longbeards but alas there's no money until I get some of my mountain of unused models sold on EBAY.Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-58201385026242191892010-06-02T06:34:00.000-07:002010-06-02T06:41:40.511-07:00Photos of finished LongbeardsAs promised I was able to take some pictures of the completed Longbeards this morning. In this time I was able to finish off the last two of the classic metal Longbeards I bought months ago. I still need to buy and paint another 15 to finish off the unit but unless I hit the lottery that will have to wait... I do like the feeling of finishing out a part of a unit and being able to display it. I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow when the sun is out.

In addition to working on the dwarves I am also currently doing a long-overdue inventory of models that I have and will never get around to painting, let alone playing with. I'm hoping to clear out a lot of the clutter in my hobby area and possibly generate some cash for some more stunties!Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-33572435932492163972010-05-10T11:47:00.001-07:002010-05-10T12:00:26.604-07:00The Camp Fire- Fluffing ItFirst collaborative post for the Trading Post blog network. Today's topic is the role of fluff in your army.

Personally, the background story of a force is what drives me to collect and paint my armies. I pick up and paint random models here and there, but for the armies that I actively collect and play with the fluff drives everything for me. Of course there are always going to be "uber-units" but I really try to stay away from them, unless they fit the theme of my army. If they do fit the theme then I will try to tone them down (unless I am playing against one or two people at the club). Generally though I can't get motivated to paint unless I am really excited about the background.

The two armies that I'm building up right now are my dwarves and my Space Wolves. For both of them I've tried to create the theme for the army and then build around that. My dwarves are based around the idea that the lord of Karak Hirn is leading some of the veterans from the throng into the lower levels to reclaim them from the grobi and rat-men that have overtaken them. Ironbreakers and longbeards feature prominently in the force, I have tried to minimize the number of gunpowder weapons in the list with the belief that all that smoke would really make tunnel fighting incredibly difficult. This theme is partly based around some of the neat artwork and stories in the army book, but mostly it's because I love the Ironbreaker models and the chance to keep adding more to my force is alluring. I'm still fleshing out the background for my wolves, I'm kind of leaning towards a force led by Logan and including lots of Wolf Guard and Long Fangs to represent the 13th company. As I said in the last post I love the wulfen models from the Eye of Terror campaign so any chance to use those is a plus.

As far as gaming goes I try to incorporate some story into the battle. It doesn't get me too excited to look at something and say "x points vs. y points, GO!". In my head I'll try to come up with some reason for why the two sides are fighting. As the battle goes on I'll try to remember particularly heroic (or cowardly) units and then add to them later on to represent their glories (maybe a shield from a Chaos Warrior on the base of an Ironbreaker champion).

Background for armies gets me excited about painting and playing and really keeps the hobby from getting too stagnant for me.Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-75519230529523489212010-05-09T05:51:00.000-07:002010-05-09T05:53:39.131-07:00Some WorkFinals and end of semester projects are done, so I can finally get back down to painting. I was struck the other day by the feeling that I should paint up some of the old Wulfen models that I had from the Eye of Terror summer campaign. I was only able to find 4 out of the 5 though, bummer. So far I've got their armor and flesh all finished up and now I'm just working on the ornamentation on the armor and then all of their fur and fangs. Lots of time to paint right now with two weeks off of work to boot!Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-84377920105549374062010-03-07T07:55:00.000-08:002010-03-07T08:07:29.066-08:00Ironbreakers and Thane BSBLast night I sat down and pushed myself to finish out the last 3 Ironbreakers I need for the unit. You'll notice that there's only 19 in there, that last space is for a character, I don't know if I want to run the Runesmith in there or try to free up some points for a second thane, at the moment though I will be using the Runesmith in there.

I also took a couple of pictures of the thane BSB that will be running with the Longbeards. My monthly goal using this system is between 12 and 15 depending on how many papers I need to write for school and the amount of hours I work each week. In February I managed to paint 14 points worth of models, half of which are for my dwarves, the rest are for a Khador force for Warmachine I'm working on. I'm setting the same goal of 12 points for March. Ideally in March I'd like to paint 3 Ironbreakers to finish out that unit and then finish the 10 Longbeards that are on the way. We'll see how that goes.Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-70129965341332280482010-02-27T16:36:00.000-08:002010-02-27T16:39:39.466-08:00Longbeards on the wayOrdered myself two boxes of the beautiful old metal longbeards the other day, I should have them in time for spring break. I have 25 painted up as my longbeards right now, but when I have the new metal ones painted I will phase them out and use them as warriors. When I get the 10 that are on the way finished up I will order the last 15. As of right now I have a full unit of 20 Ironbreakers, 25 Warriors and 1 Thane completed. Next up will be the new metal Longbeards and then the organ gun I think. I am also trying to figure out a decent conversion for the gyrocopter because I don't care for the Games Workshop version.Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-32698483095788573682010-02-10T20:43:00.000-08:002010-02-10T20:45:47.565-08:00Thane BSBWith a snow day in effect in State College (self imposed of course) I knocked out my thane BSB in one day's worth of painting. Though the model doesn't actually have a banner ( I loved the sculpt too much to mess with it) it will be the BSB for the army. Will put up pictures when the sun comes out tomorrow. Tried some new techniques with this model that I am really happy with. It's really cool to look at the models I have finished just in the past 6 months and see how my skills have improved and where I still need more work!Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-31312232999286023082010-02-04T14:42:00.000-08:002010-02-04T15:03:24.006-08:00Sorscha WIP and completed and Juggernaught WIPFirst off are a few bad shots of Sorscha in progress, please pardon my awesome photo taking abilities<img style="cursor: pointer; I've had the Khador and Cryx faction boxes sitting around for a few years so I pulled out the Khador one today and decided to paint it up. So far I'm working on Sorscha and the Destroyer 'jack (I think it's the destroyer at least). Super excited about Sorscha, I think this is some of the best painting I've ever done. I'm going to go take some pics now and post them up ASAP. Woohoo!Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-54981442741062368802009-12-11T07:50:00.000-08:002009-12-11T07:56:16.203-08:00New Year, New ArmyWell I've decided that to ring in the new year in style I will be starting a new army. I had mentioned Wood Elves earlier but then I started re-reading A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin and the idea of knights just stuck into my head. Go figure. So I will be trying to build and paint a 2,000 point Bretonnian army this year, all while starting my marriage, trying to get into law school, working, finding a career, moving home, starting law school, starting a new job and trying to keep my head stuck to my shoulders. I'm either bold or mad, or both, we'll find out. Later today I'm going to sit down with a planner and try to work out a schedule on a weekly and monthly basis to try to stick to. I'll post updates as to how I'm sticking with it. Maybe I'll tell Julie and she'll force me to stick to the deadlines because she is great at keeping me on task.
Won't have much hobby time coming up in the next month or so. Finals are next week so I'll be working on those. More importantly though, a week from tomorrow Julie and I will be getting married! We first started talking about all this more than two years ago so it's crazy to sit here and know that it's only 8 days away! I'm nervous about some things but I am just so excited and happy to be marrying the woman I love! Needless to say, with the wedding and then the holidays right after I won't have much time to work on assembling and painting my toy soldiers.Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-78559425656630557012009-11-15T09:26:00.000-08:002009-11-15T09:44:56.637-08:00Dwarves v. Chaos v. ChaosLast night I managed to get a game in against 2 other guys from Hell's Crucible. We only had 3 people though so we decided to fight a three way battle. I'm still trying to get the basics down and advance my skills a bit so this was a stretch for me but it was lots of fun. I had a 4' by 2' rectangle on an 8' board edge and the other two were in the corners opposite me. I tried to spread out the warmachines and quarrelers evenly so that I could slow down both sides and then move my infantry blocks to help out whichever side was going to get hit first. I didn't make notes of their lists or even what specifically happened each turn so I'll just give some of the highlights and then some reflection on what I could have done better. The army to my left ran some Chosen Knights and Warriors with a big block of Marauders. He used Valkia with the Warriors. On his far corner was the Troll King with 6 troll friends but they ignored me for the duration of the game. On my other side were 2 huge blocks of Marauders, a small unit each of Marauder horsemen and Knights and then a unit of Chaos Chosen. His lord was a Daemon Prince that was pretty nasty up until about turn 3.

My early turn shooting didn't do much, I think I took a wound off of the troll king with my bolt thrower and that's about it. By the end of turn 1 I had a DP throwing some nasty spells (his treason of tzeentch got max power and hits both times it was cast) and by the end of about turn 2 my unit of Hammerers was down to 2 plus the Lord on his shieldbearers. After bringing that unit down a good bit the DP killed my bolt thrower crew and then tried to kill the organ gun crew but left one man standing. That same turn my Ironbreakers got flank charged by Chosen Knights and then by Valkia in the front. 5 IBs dead and nobody dead back and I was running for the hills, their short little legs failed them and they were run down by the Knights. Well there went the left flank. He would have overrun into the Organ Gun but he wanted me to gun down the DP, so I obliged the next turn and managed to hit and wound with all 10 shots, of which he only saved 3. Demon prince splatter mark. Next few turns weren't too exciting. In turn 5 my longbeards and thane got a flank charge in on the chaos knights from my right-hand opponent. I did one wound and the knights broke from combat. He rolled a 3 for his flee and I was actually able to run them down! Go longbeards! That turn my lord and his 2 hammerers left charged the chaos chosen from the right-hand opponent and locked them into combat for the remainder of the game. In my final turn I got them below half-strength so at least they took some VP for me. In turn 6 I also managed to line up an organ gun shot between two units right at Valkia. She got the same treatment as the Demon Prince. Both lords fell to the might of the organ gun, I can't get enough of this thing. I also managed to burn down a handful of marauders with the gyrocopter and take them below half strength.

My turn 6 exploits managed to put me into 2nd in VPs for the battle, it's not a win but I'm still quite happy with it. For next time I really need to re-do the runes on the lord's weapon as he really lacks any killing power as I have him set up right now. Organ gun and gyro were wonderful, again. I'm not sure about the cannon and the Bolt Thrower. They both caused some wounds but nothing tremendous, then again it is probably user error here so they will stay in the list. I want to keep the list the same as far as models go right now and just modify who has which runes (though the lord is really the only one who needs it) and maybe give the longbeards great weapons instead of HW and Shield.Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8790021415192892528.post-10013179560568632862009-11-07T11:32:00.000-08:002009-11-07T11:39:25.602-08:00Losing my mind?So this morning I received a package from the WarStore (my plasticrack dealer of choice). Inside this wonderful box was a new battalion of warhammer fantasy troops. Clearly I have lost my mind, these were wood elves! Yes indeed, I am delving into the forest of Athel Loren and starting a Wood Elves army. I love the idea of a smallish army made up of somewhat elite troops with lots of archers and then some trees running around for good measure. This doesn't mean the end of my dwarves though. I am planning on alternating painting for the two armies so that I can end up with two fully painted armies just in time for the new Empire and Orcs and Goblins that are rumored to be in the works for next summer. I was up in the air about what new army I wanted to work on. The skaven have been a personal favorite for me but the sheer numbers of models would be too hard on my budget and my already limited amount of painting time.

For the elves I am going to use an autumnal forest color pallette. In my package this morning I also had 2 Reaper paint triads, one is Autumn Browns and the other is Bloodthirsty Reds. I'm thinking lots of brown (obviously) with some reds, oranges and yellows here and there to break up the monotony a little bit. I am nervous about painting the horses though because I have never had to paint cavalry before.Youth and Beauty Brigadierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03662507957011662046noreply@blogger.com0
